Looking Ahead

Greetings!

The sun moves further and further south, and with the shorter days, we've already come close to touching the freezing mark at dawn on those special days when the sky is perfectly clear and the humidity hovers near 10%. In short: late fall, cool weather, and long shadows. Beautiful.

We've just returned from Santa Fe, where Steve's opening (Stephen Strom: A Retrospective) at Verve Gallery was, by any measure a success. Most notably, the opening on October 26, followed by the lecture on the 27th (A Fusion of Art and Astronomy) afforded the opportunity to meet and talk with a fairly broad cross section of the Santa Fe photographic and art communities. The talk concluded with Richard Clarke reading a selection of his poems from Sand Mirrors (Polytropos Press) and was followed by a book signing. A number of insightful individuals offered comments re the images that were thought provoking as well as gratifying.

A catalog for the retrospective is available. The 162 page, 8x8" catalog includes images spanning his 40 year photographic career, and is graced by an introduction written by Rebecca A. Senf, Norton Family Curator at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson and the Phoenix Art Museum. A print copy and/or digital (PDF) version of the catalog can be ordered at this link.

Over the next several days, we will be preparing for our upcoming trip to GuatePhoto. Steve has been named one of 15 finalists selected from 960 entries in the GuatePhoto 2012 Festival in Guatemala City. We will be traveling to Guatemala to attend the festival and to give a joint full day workshop on November 10. Following the festival we will visit Tikal and other sites in Guatemala and Belize.

Beach Tracks Steve and Karen both have two images on exhibit at the Timeless Meditations exhibit at the Tubac Center of the Arts. The show opened on October 12 and runs through November 11. We attended the opening reception and were extremely pleased with the high quality and diversity of the work. We are proud to be included in the show.

Steve and Karen also have 2 pieces each accepted in to the Member's Juried Exhibit at Tubac Center for the Arts. The show runs from November 16, 2012 - January 7, 2013. Steve has two of his architectural interpretations from our trip to Spain and Karen has two from her Islamic Tile Study series in the show.

Steve's work will be featured in a two person show entitled Landings with Stuart Jenks at ArtsEye Gallery in Tucson with an opening on Saturday, December 1 (6 - 9pm). This show will include new images from the portfolio "Illusions of Intimacy," as well as 8 three-dimensional pieces in Japanese/Chinese screen format.

A overview of Steve's retrospective exhibition at Verve Gallery has been added to his website. You can follow the arc of his photographic vision and view a sample of the images to be shown in the show and in the catalog discussed below.
