August - September Activities
Upcoming

Greetings!

After a summer of generous monsoon rains, grass in the Sonoita Valley is reaching waist level and above. On breezy mornings, the seed heads shimmer under the desert sun, and late summer wildflowers abound.

While the rains were nourishing the grasslands, each of us has made progress on major projects: Karen on her animated e-book (panoramas of the desert southwest for armchair explorers), while Steve has put together a mockup of Celestial Siblings, an exploration of landscapes on two planetary surfaces - earth and mars.

We are about to embark on a two week journey: through Death Valley, the California coast, to Santa Cruz to celebrate our granddaughter's marriage, and finally to the San Rafael Swell in Utah, where we hope to explore areas in the northern Swell which for some reason we've never made time to visit.

We are pleased to report that one of Karen's Islamic tile images has been accepted into the 2013 Arizona Biennial at the Tucson Museum of Art. The exhibit opened on July 19 and will run through September 29. This is the third time that one of Karen's images has been selected for this show. The Biennial Bash will be held on the evening that the show closes, with music, wine and light food available. Bidding in the silent auction will allow you to acquire one or more of the works in the show. The catalog for the silent auction is now available and you can place a bid or make a purchase now.

Two of Steve's images are included in the Verve Gallery of Photography's 10th Anniversary Exhibition - Figures Studieswhich closed on August 31 in Santa Fe.

Two of Karen's mathematical mosaic images from her series, The Perfect in Nature, will appear in the exhibit, Piece by Piece: An Exhibition of Mosaic Artwork, at Tohono Chul Gallery. The opening reception for the exhibition will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, September 13. While we will not be able to attend, we hope some of you will make it to the show, if not the reception.

Steve was notified that he is a finalist in the PhotoLucida's Critical Mass 2013. His portfolio, along with those of the other finalists, will now be seen by approximately 200 curators, gallerists and publishers from around the world.

We would like to make you aware of our new website for our electronic books. This site will preview the books we publish ourselves, those published with other publishers, and works developed in this format for other organizations. We will also preview books that are in the process of development.

Steve contributed commentary for a set of images in the exhibit, From Above, at the Phoenix Art Museum (curated by Rebecca Senf). The exhibit is documented in a free ebook which is available for download.

We want to remind everyone that prints of the images in Sand Mirrors are available at very reasonable prices from the Image Collective in Ashland, OR, in their TIC Collection. The photographs are all printed on archival materials, 8" by 8" centered on an 11" by 14" sheet, with prices starting at $25. All images in the book are available.
